Parenting: Technology Is Not A Free Babysitter

Our children are far too plugged in. Sadly in a fast paced technology driven society, conventional views of parenting have ceased to exist to a massive amount of those claiming this sacred role. Technology, a luxury, has turned into a needed necessity for survival to a large number of parents in this informational age. As parents work hectic jobs to keep up with the Jones’, children are too often babysit by electronic device be it computer, cell phones, televisions, or the latest in video game innovation. While studies are being conducted to determine a correlation between a technology focus and decreases in intelligence, often forgot is how the time passing devices can turn quickly into addiction. Technology provides entertainment, but the question becomes how much time should children really be spending on this entertainment? Our children must be protected, a role by parent not by computer. Online time needs to be carefully monitored and limited, as well as technology time in general. Time spent in excess with technological devices yield negative effects; these effects obesity, poor grades, failed socialization, poor relationships, and so forth. Excessive technology use may also be a band-aid for deeper emotional issue such as emotional, sexual, or physical abuse. As parents we created our children to be the future, not to be placed in a room and entertained by LCD display or television monitor. Avatars cannot, and should not replace human interaction. Be an active parent, there is no time like the present to take charge and regain the precious role of parent as childhood memories are passing by. To date there are no technological devices exist to stop the hands of time, time you should be spending with your child(ren)
