Info: A Detailed Look Inside Computer Storage

The twenty-first century reflects rich diversity as a globally interconnected society, chief researchers at the Oxford Institute chart a significant amplification in data regarding the reliance on computerized technological devices. Nonetheless, reality needs no scientific figures to notice such growth; intensified connectivity impacts our day-to-day life, as we go on a pursuit for services that provide an instant connection; without service outages, hassles, and errors. The amplified dependence upon technology and connectivity spans the globe, visually noticed each day by; the obnoxious cell phone driver, the addictive cell phone user, the fast fingered texting addict, the growing generation of Apple I-phone fanatics and I-pod listeners, the mobile Kindle bookworms, the must have Wi-Fi PC infusions, the subwoofer enthusiast, the lost souls without GPS navigation, the speeders with radar protection, the famed Youtube amateur videographers, and so forth — changing with the diversity of the universal technological consumption, as brands and products become a top priory.  As a technological product, many people often forget internal storage; for some products that storage must be purchased in the proper form of memory chips/cards – the chips/cards arrange in price nd in size, thus it is recommended to research needs prior to a purchase.

A question often asked is ‘how much storage space do I need’, a simplistic inquiry yet challenging in its answer. For a proper result one first must be aware of the data they will be saving to their internal memory, and relayed to the assistant; be it documentation, compact disk installs, database files, downloaded music, downloaded programs, gadgets, images, serial gaming quests, software testing, tools, tutorials, and so forth — as each concept has a different average bit storage rate. Secondly, it is a recommended idea for the purchaser and assistant both to know just what they are receiving; as the two letter abbreviations can be chaotic to comprehend. Below, I have included resources for such information as well as broke each down, simplistically.

—Common Acceptance of Storage Rates—

-Manufactures often create simplistic and easy to comprehend integers to assist in buyers/clients/techies retain information; as storage does get rather hard to understand.

→ Bit = 0 or 1
→ Bytes = 8 bits
→ Kilobyte (KB) = 1,000 bytes
→ Megabyte (MB) =1,000,000 bytes
→ Gigabyte (GB) = 1,000,000,000 bytes
→ Terabyte (TB) = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes

—Storage—

With USB flash drives becoming increasing popular and being renovated in look and function, I am choosing to use these devices to provide a rough estimate of storage; excluding the terabyte form which follow. Users must note that with storage it can drastically vary, due to size and length; as well as file types – which is why one must always use acceptable file types.

→ Megabyte: 64 – Expect to store approximately 30 photos, 15 Mp3s, and 0.1 minutes of video
→ Megabyte: 256 – Expect to store approximately 122 photos, 61 Mp3, and 0.5 minutes of video
→ Megabyte: 512 – Expect to store approximately 243 photos, 122 Mp3s, and 1 minute of video.
→ Gigabyte: 2 – Expect to store approximately 973 photos, 486 Mp3s, and 3.9 minutes of video.
→ Gigabyte: 4 – Expect to store approximately 1946 photos, 973 Mp3s, and 7.8 minutes of video
→ Gigabytes: 34 – Expect to store approximately 15,565 photos, 7,783 Mp3s, and 62.3 minutes of video.

Note: Storage rates are conditional to all three being simultaneously, in example if you were a photographer that stored photos only; the rate for photos would be higher, equivalent to video, and music.

—The Terabyte—

Is my top recommendation for an external hard drive, as maximum capacity for personal use is arduous to reach; most will never meet full capacity in their lifetime.

—Terabyte Storage—
→ 916,259,689 pages of plaintext documents averaging 1,200 characters each
→ 4,581,298 books with an average of 200 pages
→ 349,525 digital photos averaging 3MB each
→ 262,144 Mp3 files averaging 4MB each
→ 1,613 650MB Compact Discs
→ 233 4.38GD DVD’s
→40 25GB Blu-Ray discs
Note: Again, this is based on the simultaneous storage of all the above, if a user has no desire to store blu-ray, dvd’s, or compact disks storage will dramatically increase.

—Other Information—

→ Petabyte = 1,000,000,000,000,000
→ Exabyte = 1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000
→ Zettabyte = 1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000,000
→ Yottabyte =1, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000,000,000
Note: These are not use for personal use, yet; but for business server use

→ In a 2009 poll the Internet was estimated to contain 500 exabytes of information
